Na última terça-feira, Bruce Barbour, Ombudsman de New South Wales, publicou o relatório How are Taser weapons used by NSW Police Force?, sobre o uso do Taser pela polícia de New South Wales.

O trabalho analisou 556 casos entre junho e novembro de 2010, ou seja, não incluiu o do Roberto Laudisio, o que para o parlamentar David Shoebridge, que tem acompanhado o caso desde o início, foi um equívoco. Eis o que ele escreveu para a imprensa:

It is quite remarkable that the Ombudsman has released his Taser review without even considering the disturbing evidence and compelling submissions from the Roberto Curti coronial. The highest profile potential abuse of Tasers by NSW Police has flown under the Ombudsman’s radar and failed to inform this report. One of the clear options for limiting Taser use by Police is to withdraw them from general duties officers and limit them to specially trained squads. This was the recommendation of the Ombudsman in his last review but, despite the ongoing abuses of the weapon, has not been supported in this review. This report raises serious ongoing concerns with the police use of Tasers but proposes little other than tinkering with the existing regulations. On the Ombudsman’s findings one in eight cases was an inappropriate, and potentially unlawful, use of a Taser. This means that in just five short months at the end of 2010 there were 27 people who were wrongly Tasered by the NSW Police. In another 53 cases at the end of 2010 people were inappropriately threatened with a drawn Taser by NSW Police. A large proportion are by very junior officers with 4 or less years on the job who are clearly baffled by the Police’s poorly drafted operating procedures. At a minimum there must be strict external review of each Taser incident and a prohibition on their use by general duties police.

Na própria terça, a família do Roberto publicou a seguinte nota:

The family of Roberto Laudisio Curti notes the report released by the NSW Ombudsman today in relation to Taser usage.The family believes that many of the recommendations relate to the way in whichTaser was used on the night Roberto died, including multiple uses of Taser (particularly in “drivestun” mode), use on a person who is fleeing, and use on a person after he or she is handcuffed.The family feels that several of the Ombudsman’s recommendations are a step in the right direction. However, we do not wish to comment on any specific matters which may be relevant to the Coroner’s findings regarding the death of our beloved Roberto.As outlined in Mr Hamill’s closing submissions last Friday, we strongly believethat individual accountability relating to the misuse of Taser is essential. Without it, any policies, guidelines and training are likely to be significantly less effective.

Já no último final de semana, no Etihad Stadium, em Melbourne, um grupo de torcedores que viu o Melbourne Victory vencer o Adelaide United por 2 a 1 levou uma faixa condenando a morte do Roberto, que trazia na parte de cima a frase “Justice for Roberto Laudisio”.
